INSTEP and DOSH Terengganu Bond Over Sports Day

INSTEP staff and DOSH Terengganu came together for Sports Day 2024 INSTEP & DOSH on 25 September 2024, leaving the laptops behind and stepping away from the corporate environment.

Aside from acting as the platform to unleash the sporty talents from both parties, this initiative is also to support PETRONAS MESTIfit4health agenda, under the element of Move Right.

The Move Right element aims to promote health and wellness among employees and the community, focusing on encouraging physical activity and proper movement techniques to enhance overall well-being.

Also present during the day were Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Terengganu management team including, Ir. Noorazman Soud, Director of DOSH Terengganu, Deputy Director of Operations, En. Mohammad Nizam Ali, and Ir. Nurlinda, Deputy Director of Technical Services. 

“Inculcating a safe workplace culture requires a collective and continuous commitment from all individuals at the workplace, and it should be a primary focus especially for INSTEP, a pivotal point for nurturing the future workforce. We
continuously seek advice from DOSH Terengganu to ensure safety in INSTEP are fully enforced, at all time,” En. Mohamad bin Nasir, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP remarked on the continuous collaboration between DOSH Terengganu and
INSTEP, since 2014.

The collaborations are including turnaround Certificate of Fitness (CF) for Upstream Train A, Train B and Downstream Plant at UDTP during Turnaround 2024 and Seminar Safety Talk: Safety in Workplace during Turnaround 2022.

“Though during Turnaround period is a hectic time for employees, they still need to have some space to do the physical activities and exercise, to ensure to mental wellness, and this sports day is held to provide employees with the opportunity to do so,” added En. Mohamad bin Nasir.

INSTEP has maintained a strong partnership with DOSH, consistently collaborating on various safety-related initiatives to ensure the highest standards across all operations.

Donate Blood, Save Lives: A Simple Act of Kindness

Blood Transfusion Service Unit, Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) in collaboration with INSTEP HSE Department had organised a blood donation drive on 25 September 2024. This initiative, an annual partnership between HSNZ and INSTEP, marked the second blood drive of the year, following the first session held in April.

A total of 254 individuals, comprising INSTEP staff and learners, had successfully donated 203 bags of blood over the course of the two donation drives in 2024. Aligned with PETRONAS MESTIfit4health agenda, under the element of Individual Right!, this programme encourages staff and learners to promote responsible behaviour from the perspective of managing health and safety risk towards self and others.

“Blood donation drives provide an excellent opportunity for INSTEP members to network and foster connections that can lead to future collaborations and partnerships. It also promotes learning and sharing, especially from a medical perspective,” said Siti Nabihah Shamsuddin, Manager of INSTEP’s HSE Department, reflecting on the success of the event.

Beyond the life-saving impact, blood donation offers participants a mini-physical check-up, providing valuable health insights that can serve as preventive health screenings. 

“As a technical solutions provider in the energy industry, INSTEP is committed to developing well-rounded students who excel not only academically but also socially. Blood donation is a simple yet powerful way for students and staff to give back, reinforcing the importance of social responsibility and fostering a healthier, more connected community,” commented En. Mohamad bin Nasir, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP.

All in all, the blood donation drive was a resounding success. The overwhelming support and participation made a significant impact, ensuring the continuation of this vital effort in the future.

KTC Further Supports National TVET Agenda, Produces Future-Ready Graduates

The PETRONAS-run Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC) continues to support the national Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) agenda in developing technical capability among Sabah youth. 

Since its establishment in 2011, KTC has produced 211 graduates, a crucial step 
forward in transforming the future of Sabahan youth by equipping them with in-demand technical skills.

Firdaus Ismail, the best graduate from 2021 intake, delivered his appreciation speech, dedicating his success to his parents and instructors.

The number includes 17 trainees from the 2021 intake who graduated on 19 September at a convocation ceremony held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).

General Manager Learning Academy, PETRONAS Technical Training Sdn Bhd, En. Azhar Ahmad said in his speech, “KTC serves as a testament to PETRONAS’ commitment to producing highly skilled technical workforce, aligned with the national TVET agenda as a ‘game changer’ in the government’s increased emphasis on TVET, as reflected in TVET’s prominence in the 11th and 12th Malaysia Plans.” 

In addressing concerns about the adequacy of the TVET-skilled manpower pool, he praised the employability of KTC graduates, noting that nearly 100 percent of previous graduates have secured employment in the oil and gas sector as well as in other industries.

Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, YB Datuk Dr. Haji Mohd Arifin, delivered his officiating speech during the event.

KTC is the first institution in Sabah to be recognised as an Accredited Centre by the Department of Skills Development under the Ministry of Human Resources. It offers a three-year full-time diploma-level training in Industrial Instrumentation & Control System – Monitoring & Control (Level 4), Malaysian Skills Diploma (DKM). Graduates from KTC are also identified as potential feeders for INSTEP’s Technical Energy Enrichment Programme (TEP).

30 Job Ready Technicians Produced from INSTEP TEP Programme

On 31 July 2024, INSTEP marks another milestone in its achievements as PETRONAS’ technical training arm, celebrating 30 learners from Technical Energy Enrichment Programme (TEP), under the sponsorship of PETRONAS Downstream and PETRONAS Gas & Maritime Business. The graduated learners are from Process trade. 

The 10-month training programme is curated with the learning block comprising of Competency Based Assessment (CBA) modules, which are based on PETRONAS Occupational Skill Standard (POSS) and complemented with experiential learning at UDTP.

Also present during the event were En. Fauzamsaari bin Geran Head of Plant, PETRONAS Chemical MTBE, and En. A Fatah bin Abu Mansor, Head of Special Projects, PETRONAS Gas Business.

KTC’s Kaamatan Festival Fosters Stronger Bonds Among Diverse Cultures

Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC) hosted a lively Pesta Kaamatan celebration earlier this month, bringing together staff and students for a great time. Delegates from INSTEP management team, led by En. Azhar Ahmad, Head of the Learning Academy, also attended the event.

En. Alfie Mahathir, Manager of KTC, emphasized Sabah’s rich diversity in terms of both race and culture during his opening remarks. “More than 36 recognized races and more than 52 distinct dialects are found in Sabah. Despite these distinctions, Sabahans find ways to respect one another’s cultural history and cooperate to achieve common goals.”

On the other hand, En. Azhar in his speech praised KTC for the outstanding performance shown by fellow learners in terms of academic. “This achievement would not have been possible without the dedicated staff working behind the scenes”. He also added that he was deeply moved by the warmth and hospitality from the people at KTC during his visit on 3 & 4 July 2024.

En. Azhar also had the honour to launch the newly developed KTC Exhibition Bunting, which will be utilised extensively in exhibitions, seminars, and conferences to elevate KTC’s status as a local technical talent developer in the state of Sabah.

Maintaining the theme of cultural diversity, the remainder of the festival featured Sugandoi performances by fellow students; a singing competition featuring traditional Kadazan Dusun songs; and traditional customs celebration to round off the joyous occasion.

Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC) Secures Second Place Aero Dance Competition in KSITS 2024

The first Kejohanan Sukan Institut TVET Sabah (KSITS) was held from 6 to 10 May 2024. With the aim to promote sportsmanship, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle among student and instructor, the event was joined by various Technical and Vocational Education institutes including Kolej Vocational Sabah, Institut Latihan dan Perdagangan (ILTP), Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP), Borneo TVET College, Institut Kemahiran MARA (IKM), Montfort Youth Training Centre (MYTC) and Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC). Also present during the officiation of the event was Datuk Armizan Mohd. Ali, Member of Parliament P.175 Papar and Menteri Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Kos Sara Hidup. 

The competition featured a variety of sports, including netball, football, speak takraw, volleyball, badminton, and aero dance, with both male and female athletes participating. Throughout the event, each institute competed in various categories, showcasing their skills and dedication. KTC succeeded in achieving second place in the aero dance competition. Winners brought back medals, trophies, certificate, and cash rewards.

In addition to encouraging an active lifestyle, this sport event acted as a platform for all participants to enhance teamwork and cooperation, while also served as a scouting ground for sports talent in Sabah. 

KTC had participated in 5 sport categories, and successfully secured the second place in the aero dance female category and was awarded with RM500 cash rewards, medals, trophies and certificate. 

In summary, this event was more than just a sports competition; it was a celebration of youth, talent, and the spirit of togetherness, playing crucial roles in promoting sports and physical fitness among TVET student in Sabah while providing a platform for collaboration opportunities among TVET Institute.

In summary, this event was more than just a sports competition; it was a celebration of youth, talent, and the spirit of togetherness, playing crucial roles in promoting sports and physical fitness among TVET student in Sabah while providing a platform for collaboration opportunities among TVET Institute.

INSTEP Empowers University Undergraduates with Industrial Experiential Learning

INSTEP as PETRONAS’ technical training arm extends its roles in preparing tomorrow’s workforce to equip sponsored university undergraduates who are embarking their industrial internship journeys, with essential skills and knowledge necessary to excel in professional environments. 

The two initiatives under this agenda are Summer Internship Induction Programme (SIIP) in collaboration with Gas Business Capability and GHRM HCI and PETRONAS Internship Induction Programme (PIIP) for internship students as a part of collaboration with UTP. 

The PIIP first session started on 12 May to 16 May 2024, with 28 participants from UTP.

As for the SIIP, it commenced its first pilot session involving 11 scholarship students from overseas on 4 June to 6 June 2024.

With the main aim to expose fundamental knowledge of oil and gas industry to the participants, the programme is structured with syllabus of Overview of Petroleum Industry, HSE practices and Sustainability Explained. 

The blended learning methodology are tailored to ensure all participants are equipped with a holistic understanding, through theoretical classes and visit to Upstream Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) for an experiential learning experience. 

According to Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP, Encik Mohamad bin Nasir, “INSTEP is prepared to support technical talent development through early integration of industrial knowledge from day one, to ensure progressive growth of tomorrow’s workforce.”

INSTEP Sokong Agenda Dasar TVET Negara melalui Program Latihan Teknikal Wakalah

Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, 24 Jun 2024 – Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) berjaya melatih 27 orang asnaf dari kategori fakir dan miskin terpilih di negeri Terengganu melalui program Latihan Teknikal Zakat Wakalah 2024. Program pra-pekerjaan yang dilaksanakan dengan kerjasama Yayasan Pendidikan MAIDAM (YPM) itu memberi pendedahan asas kepada pelatih kemahiran TVET di dalam sektor minyak dan gas. 

Setiap pelatih menerima sijil tamat latihan yang disampaikan oleh Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Yayasan Pendidikan MAIDAM, Norhana Binti Yaakub di dalam satu majlis yang diadakan di INSTEP hari ini. Turut hadir, Pengurus Besar INSTEP, Azhar bin Ahmad.

MAIDAM melalui inisiatif Zakat Wakalah, melantik entiti yang membayar zakat kepada Pusat Pungutan Zakat berkenaan untuk mengagihkan sendiri sebahagian kutipan zakat kepada asnaf yang layak. Sebahagian zakat yang dibayar oleh kakitangan PETRONAS  kepada MAIDAM itu dikembalikan kepada Dana As-Syakirin sebagai pemegang amanah yang menguruskan zakat kakitangan PETRONAS. 

Dana As-Syakirin mengagihkan sejumlah dana yang diterima tersebut untuk melatih asnaf di dalam bidang TVET sebagai salah satu usaha meningkatkan taraf hidup mereka melalui penglibatan di dalam sektor minyak dan gas. Manakala INSTEP selaku pusat latihan teknikal minyak dan gas, dilantik sebagai ejen pelaksana yang bertanggungjawab menjalankan pembelajaran  

Melalui program sepenuh masa yang dijalankan selama 4 bulan ini, pelatih didedahkan dengan pelbagai kemahiran asas di dalam bidang elektrikal dan mekanikal. Selain itu pelajar juga dibekalkan dengan program-program pensijilan tambahan seperti Ujian Tanpa Musnah (NDT), Keselamatan Bekerja di Tempat Terkurung (AESP), Pengetahuan Bantuan Cemas, Latihan Keselamatan dan Kesihatan (OGSP), dan Induksi Asas Keselamatan Luar Pesisir dan Latihan Kecemasan (BOSIET). Sijil-sijil tersebut merupakan keperluan penting yang melayakkan setiap individu untuk bekerja di dalam industri minyak dan gas. 

Di dalam usaha meningkatkan nilai tambah program, INSTEP juga turut memperkenalkan modul sampingan seperti subjek Bahasa Inggeris, Pendidikan Islam dan Kesedaran Kemampanan. Selain daripada itu, aspek pembinaan keterampilan diri dan personaliti yang professional juga turut disertakan di dalam program tersebut. Pelatih-pelatih juga turut terlibat di dalam pelbagai aktiviti yang dijalankan di dalam kampus, seperti sukan, riadah serta aktiviti pengukuhan pasukan (team building).

Sepanjang tempoh program, selain kemudahan penginapan dan makanan, setiap pelatih turut menerima elaun bulanan sebanyak RM500.  

“Kami berharap, program ini mampu menarik minat setiap pelatih untuk terlibat di dalam industri ini, seterusnya meningkatkan kemahiran mereka untuk diterima bekerja dengan syarikat penyedia perkhidmatan minyak dan gas”, tambah Mohamad.
