Process & Analytical
The Process and Analytical academy (P&A) provides training for process engineers and operators, as well as laboratory training for chemists and laboratory technicians. Equipped with our state-of-the-art facilities to fulfil various training requirements for both process and analytical, the academy is committed to develop job ready workforce for the oil and gas industries, particularly the PETRONAS Operating Units (OPUs) as well as other industries globally.
Various equipment are utilised to facilitate the training programme and to fulfil learners’ needs and requirements. For Process trade, there are distillation columns, process control training plants, Distributed Control System (DCS), wastewater treatment plants, and training simulators whereas the Analytical Laboratory is equipped with Gas Chromatograph (GC), Inductive Coupled Plasma (ICP), crude and water analysis devices.
Since 2011, P&A has been conferred by the Environment Institute of Malaysia (EiMAS) as a recognised Training Provider for wastewater treatment programme, i.e. the Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems (Biological Process) (CePIETSO-BP).

The success of the operation of an Industrial Effluent Treatment System (IETS) is primarily in the hands of the operator. A knowledgeable and skilled operator or supervisor knows how to monitor the processes occurring in his IETS, understands what factors affect the IETS performance, knows what operational conditions are best for his IETS and how to maintain them, knows how to respond to upset conditions, understands the social obligations and legal implications for non-compliance. Therefore, the course Certified Environmental Professional in the operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment System (Biological Processes), also known as CePIETSO-BP is a mandatory prerequisite of the competency certification program for IETS operators and supervisors to fulfill the Department of Environment’s (DOE) requirement.
The main objective of this course is: –
- To impart knowledge to the IETS operators and supervisors on the importance of performance monitoring
- To develop skill on the conduct of IETS performance monitoring and evaluation of performance monitoring data

Analytical Laboratory
This facility is equipped with analytical equipment related to crude, water and sample testing comprises of major equipment such as Gas Chromatograph, Inductive Couple Plasma, Viscometer, Flash Point tester and COD reactors which enable the learners to develop knowledge and enhance their skills in operating similar equipment available in the oil and gas industries.
Water Treatment Plant
INSTEP has been conferred by the Environment Institute of Malaysia (EiMAS) as a Recognised Training Provider for our waste water treatment programme, i.e. the Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment System (Biological Processes) (CePIETSO-BP).
This facility acts as wastewater effluent treatment pilot plant, utilised to carry out CePIETSO-BP programme. Methodologies of treating wastewater effluent and safe reliable operation including system preparations, sample collecting activities, testing and interpreting the results can be carried out here.
Process Workshops
This facility accommodates Unit Operation equipment including various distillation columns, process control units, filtration unit, reverse osmosis unit, and Foxboro DCS system connected to mini plants which enable the learners to develop knowledge and enhance their skills.
