INSTEP Drives Innovation in Emission Control in Southeast Asia

Posted date: 06 October 2024

INSTEP as PETRONAS’ technical training arm has solidified its status as it has been selected as one of the venues to establish Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Centre (METEC), alongside Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, under a collaboration between PETRONAS and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).

This collaboration aims to enable Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) energy sector companies to validate their selected methane emissions measurement and quantification technologies prior to actual execution at operating facilities, and acting as a training facility for ASEAN energy sector field operators.

The compact design of the INSTEP Upstream and Downstream Training Plant (UDTP) was a key factor in its selection. Its ability to replicate the real-world congestion typical of PETRONAS offshore facilities creates an actual environment for methane detection, providing highly accurate and practical training conditions for operational readiness.

Ts. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim bin Abdul Mutalib, Viec Chancellor of UTP.

“With methane being one of the most potent greenhouse gases, this facility will play a key role in helping industries meet regulatory requirements and improve environmental performance, and this is a crucial step in addressing climate change and advancing environmental sustainability,” En. Mohamad bin Nasir, Chief Executive Officer of INSTEP remarked in his statement.

This initiative is part of the ASEAN Energy Sector Methane Leadership Programme 2.0 (MLP 2.0), themed “Turning Capacity into Action,” launched on 2 October 2024. The inaugural Methane Leadership Programme (MLP), which ran from June 2023 to October 2024, aimed to build capacity across the energy sector, focusing on methane management and reduction strategies critical to achieving regional sustainability goals.
